Andrew Garfield says playing OpenAI boss Sam Altman changed how he sees artificial intelligence. After making the upcoming film Artificial, the actor said he stopped using ChatGPT almost at once.

The 43-year-old star shared the admission during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he spoke about the film and the possible effects of AI on jobs and everyday life. ABC confirms that Garfield discussed playing Altman and the effects of AI during the programme.

Andrew Garfield Says He Quit ChatGPT

Host Jimmy Kimmel asked Garfield whether playing Altman had made him more worried about AI. Garfield compared the experience with making the 2010 film The Social Network, where he played Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.

'It's the same thing that happened to me when I did The Social Network, which was I got off Facebook immediately,' Garfield said. He then added: 'I got off my ChatGPT immediately.'

Garfield did not claim that one single event made him leave the tool. Instead, he said learning more about the subject made him feel that people were moving into 'some very unknown territory'.

Where AI Could Lead

Andrew Garfield also joked when Kimmel asked whether he felt worried about artificial intelligence. 'No, no! I feel like it's all going great!' he replied before explaining the concerns behind his reaction. His comments then turned to jobs and the economy. Garfield joked that tech leaders admit they do not fully know who could lose work or how an economy shaped by AI will work for ordinary people.

The actor did not say that AI would definitely cause those problems. His point was about uncertainty, and about how much remains unknown as companies build and release more powerful AI systems.

Film Will Premiere in New York

Artificial will have its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival on 5 October 2026. Guadagnino and members of the cast are expected to attend the screening at Alice Tully Hall.

The film is now being released by Neon after Amazon MGM Studios stepped away from distributing it earlier this year. Amazon said at the time that it believed the movie would be 'better served' with another distributor.

Neon later picked up the film, and The Guardian reports that it is due to open in select US cinemas on Christmas Day. The movie centres on the events around Altman's sudden removal and return as OpenAI chief executive in 2023.

Garfield Had A Similar Reaction to Facebook

Garfield's ChatGPT decision has a clear link to one of his best-known earlier films. In David Fincher's The Social Network, he played Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder who helped start the company with Mark Zuckerberg.

Garfield told Kimmel that making that film pushed him to stop using Facebook. More than 15 years later, playing another major figure in the tech world appears to have led him to make a similar personal choice.

This time, however, his concern is wider than one social network. Garfield's comments focused on questions about work, money and how quickly AI could change normal life, while many of its long-term effects are still unclear.
